meat

After cleaning the stall, putting fresh hay down and Pat installed the new door I was ready. Ready to get my newest member of our little farm. I picked up a cute adorable baby with curly black hair and big brown eyes. This calf will be a good addition here. And someday it will taste real good after it gets on my grill! Yep baby is meat! And yes I can eat it after raising it. No problem there. It won't be the first time and won't be the last. It is a heifer but very much on the small side. Probably will not make a good cow because of that. IF it grows good I will see about trading with someone for a steer( a male without testicles).(sounds like some men I know). I was a bit worried because it was not used to a bucket or a bottle. It still needs milk because it is young. It's mam could not provide enough for it. It was very upset when we got it here but has settled down now. It would not drink but did eat a few bites of hay. I left the bucket down there with the milk in it and another bucket with calf feed in it. I snuck down there just a bit ago and checked on it (it is a baby) and was pleased with what I saw. I have to monitor it very carefully to keep it from getting the scours. The scours can kill them fast. Scours is a severe form of the runs. Calves being feed milk replacement generally get the scours. I am hopeful that this calf will be one of the lucky ones. It is a bit older(2-3 months) so it may be able to get past that danger.

Bedtime for me I am pooped!

  9. awwww! your little heifer calf looks like a sweetie :)

I hope she stays healthy and grows fast for you. I am silly, I find it hard to keep a heifer for butchering altho they arent any different from a steer. I am just weird!

  12. he is such a cute thing, I don't think I could eat it after I raised it. I guess I have just never been around a farm, cause I know that is how it has to me. I know that the meat I buy in the store once was a cute little cow like that, but I try not to think about it LOL

  15. The reason I became a vegetarian when I was a teenager was that we ate my calf Peabody. I eat meat now, but I don't think I could eat an animal I know...I am not enough of a farmer at heart, I guess. But your calf will have the advantage of having a good life before it is eaten, which is more than most cows have.
