Is this you?
By Cathryn Conroy, Netscape News Editor
...you could be sleep deprived and putting yourself at risk for an early death. That stunning conclusion was reached by researchers at Penn State College of Medicine, who determined that when we get just six hours of sleep a night, we are actually sleep deprived. And sleep deprivation not only makes us sleepy during the day and decreases our productivity and performance levels, but also promotes the potentially dangerous process of inflammation. Inflammation of this sort can lead to a variety of problems, including heart disease and hardening of the arteries, reports WebMD.
Previous studies have examined the effects of severe sleep deprivation, which is five hours or less of sleep. This one looked at the effects of modest sleep restriction, something that many people live with day in and day out in order to meet the pressing demands of work and family. The levels of inflammatory factors skyrocketed in the 25 study volunteers--who spent 12 consecutive nights in a sleep laboratory--when they had just six hours of sleep, compared with eight hours. So when you pass up sleep to watch more television, talk to your spouse, or clean the house, you are putting yourself at risk for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
SPECIAL POEM FOR OLDER FOLKS
Special Poem for Older Folks
A row of bottles on my shelf
Caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
Goes to my heart so it won't stop.
A little white one that I take
Goes to my hands so they don't shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
Tell me I'm happy when I'm not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
And tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
Or cough or shake or even sneeze
The red ones, smallest ones of all
Go to my blood so I won't fall.
The orange one, very big and bright
Prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
Helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I'd really like to know...
Is what tells each one where to go!
There's always a lot to be thankful for if
you take time to look for it.
For example I am sitting here thinking
how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt...

General stuff
My little sweetie has an eye problem right now. She came home from school today with a stye on her eye! OUCH! Poor thing could not tolerate the moist heat for very long on her eye. She will just have to live with it. Hopefully it will pop soon. So glad it is not pinkeye.
My TV is trying to go out on me. It makes a loud humming noise. It is only 2-3 years old! I was hoping it would last until we had to get a TV for digital signals in 2009. Well I am keeping this one until it is completely gone.
It rained most of the day today. We so need it. I hate that the winds came withh it though. The leaves are all on the ground here. Looks like we have some more rain coming overnight too.
It is soupy down at the barn. I will have to put waders on and open up a stall. Precious and Crystal decided that Spirit cannot get into the stall next to them. They get in the same stall all the time. They both went in the stall she was in and ran her out. She went in the other and they did it again. The third stall is one that they never would go in. It is a shorter stall.
I have not dealt with flies at all this summer. Now they are swarming in the house. I hate them!
The main black belt test is Friday. We will be going to it to cheer on our friends. I hope I can keep from crying.

hmmmmm
Brook took one of the test for her black belt Saturday. She passed. It was a reading test. Sort of a test on endurance and patience. To be honest I am shocked she passed! LOL I think he was a little bit lenient with the kids. The main test is this Friday. I am sure she will want to go.
It has rained today. Blessed rain. Once again we are under a total watering ban and burn ban. This time even businesses are effected by the water ban. This will hurt the nurseries and carpet mills. Somehow I bet that the carpet mills get all the water they want.
I think I am going to be seriously lonely this week. Brook will be with her mama all week.
Don't fret
Must remember this. Could prevent a stroke or heart attack.

farm equipment
Theses are pictures I took last Sunday when we went to Praters Mill. Praters Mill is a craft festival that is held twice a year at the Old Praters Mill in Dalton, GA. It is on Mother's Day weekend and Columbus Day weekend. Crafters from all over come to it along with a large number of local crafters.
Above are pictures of old farm equipment. They made life easier for farmers back in the day. I know that farmers are glad that those pieces of equipment have been improved on!

Busy baking and baking and baking
Ellen and the dog
The limelight has been stolen from Britney. Ellen has managed to get herself in the spotlight again. Ellen gave away a dog that she adopted. People are hollaring that there is nothing wrong with that. I think there is. She signed a contract and agreed to if she did not want the dog or it was not working out then she would give it back. It was not up to her to just give the dog to who SHE thinks is fit. Everyone keeps saying that Ellen gave the dog to a loving family. HOW do they know that it is a loving family? How knows them? She says she spent $3000 on the dog getting its shots and training. ( I say she is crazy) She PAID to get the dog trained to be with her cats? Come on now. Cats train their own dogs. If is is a puppy, it won't take long to get the puppy trained.
In my opinion Ellen was wrong. Then to compound everything she gets on tv and boo hoos about it.

a little bit of stuff
Brook went back to school yesterday. She did not have the worse fall break. A girl in her class is in the hospital from injuries she got from a car running her over. Poor child. She was in the yard helping her grandma do some work and a car went off the road and mowed her down. She has a crushed pelvic and other injuries. It is unknown as to how long she will be in the hospital.
Brook has a science project to do. She has to make a 3D model of of the planets and the sun. Her science book is a new book yet it still lists Pluto as the 9th planet! I am glad. They can call it what they want now. IT IS A PLANET! Any ideas?
The fields look great. I will get a picture of them soon. We have another horse here now. Spirit is back with me. We went and brought her over here. We still have some grass in our pasture, she had none. She was feeling good when we released her. Started up on the bucking bronc routine. Kicking and bucking and running all over until she spotted he other 2. She then took off like a bullet to meet them It actaully went rather well. I was worried that there would be a big time fight. Spirit is happy enough to leave the status quo as it is.
Time to go. I need to get Brook to school.

Chit chat
Hey there.
Brook is doing pretty well. She sleeps a lot which is a good thing. Yesterday she went all day without asking for any pain medicine.
She is plenty disappointed about not taking her black belt test but is coming to terms with that. She is planning on taking the reading part of the test. that way she will only need to take 2 tests in the spring.
She is way bored but learning to do some things with her left hand. We go back to doc in a month and then maybe she will get to come out of the sling.
We went in halves on a brushcat. pat is out cutting the fields right now. Our tractor broke down so we are using Dee's bobcat to do the fields. Hopefully we can get some hay off of it next year. Part of the fields had a grove of yucky trees grow up in it. We tried clearing some off. We will need to use the dozer and just push it up in a pile and do a controled burn. Can't do that yet. We are under a fire burn due to the drought.
I did some clean up this morning in the garden so it can be cut also.
Well it is time to cook. I think everybody should be hungry now. I know I am.

Good news, bad news
The good news is no surgery for Brook. The bad news is she will take longer to heal. After looking over her X-rays, probing a bit(not much but it still hurt), and measuring the depth of the bone spread, the doctor decided that the best thing all around would be to leave it alone. He said the bones were parallel to each other so they will form a bond but it will take a little bit longer. I asked about the nerve problem that developes sometimes when non union bones form a bond. He said in all the years he has been practicing he has only seen it twice and those were adults. He said that he was glad that the doctor did not try a figure 8 splint on her as that is far more painful than it needs to be. She will have a slightly smaller shoulder. Poor child, she already has small shoulders!
She said thank you to all of you.

screaming
After calling around 48 different orthopaedic doctors from here to Atlanta I just about gave up. Finally I got ahold of the insurance company again. They said for me to get Brook's PCP to get an out of network referral. Lucky for me they were able to do so fairly quickly. Brook has an appointment tomorrow as the doctor was already gone for the day. I only have to drive 30 miles for this appointment.
I am able to keep her pain under fair control for now. I dread tomorrow. She will be in extreme pain if they fix it then.
yep it is
Well after a long wait in the ER we were finally seen. I am so glad that I had some pain medicine to give Brook before we left. Yes the bone is broken in the worse possible way. It is snapped clean into, separated, and displaced, meaning that it is not lined up. I have to get her into orthopedic today to determine what to do. No matter what, I know it will be extremely painful.
What a way to start your fall break from school.
She will not be taking the black belt test now. I have no idea when she will be able to get back to it. She is upset about that.

tired
I am tired. I have not done anything. I do not feel like doing anything. All I really want to do is veg out. At the same time, I do not want to do that. I want energy. I want to look at everything and be happy and glad that I can go get it done, whatever. I suppose I am a functional depressive. I do it even though all I want is to curl up and do nothing. PLease no suggestions of meds because I will not take them. I did once and it was horrible. I know what my problems are and I rarely air them here. I do have a blog where I do air them though.
Anyway. today was Career Day at Brook's school. It was a good day for the kids. they love it when they do not have school work! LOL. Brook and several other students preformed 7 shows today in 2 hours. Me, I ran around the school gathering up goodies from everybody to give to the kids. I got stickers and more stickers, pencils, pens, flower seeds, frisbees, firehats, backpacks, sewing kits, toothbrushes, megaphones, ect. I love the seeds. They are the wildflowers that the DOT plants in the middle of the roads.
I am going to put this journal to bed tonight. I will feel better tomorrow.

headaches
I just got a call from the school. Brook has another headache. I am getting concerned about them. She is having them with increased frequency. She has an appointment coming up with the doctor for a physical. I think it is sinuses but you never know. There is a chance it is her eyes even though that has been checked out also. Eyes can change fast in kids.
I guess instead of pretty fall weather I am going to get the dreary kind. The clouds moved in yesterday with drizzles . The drizzles are not all day or even all over. Actually it seems to only be on the road, just enough drizzle to make em slick and dangerous. With any luck the dreary will pass and beautiful color will erupt all over.
I love October. This year it is a busy month. Brook is taking her black belt tests. Her mama is going to Dallas for a few days. School has their fall break next week. Friday is career day at school (Brook will be performing). Prater's Mill craft festival is next weekend. To top it off, Halloween is at the end of the month. Awwww, this is a good month.
