stepping on toes

I might step on a few toes with this one. I was reading the news (non AOL link)this morning and the first thing I see is a group is wanting Washington to spend 5 million dollars for some land for a memorial to Flight 93. 5 million dollars? Are they crazy? Further reading reveals that the entire project is due to cost 58 million dollars of which 30 million is to come from private donations. So that means 28 million is supposed to come from taxpayers pockets. I object! First of all, 58 million for the project? Everybody knows that once something gets started that it will cost millions more than that. I feel that there must be a better use of the money. Let's see, 58 million dollars would build a lot of homes for people. Or pay some of the debt down that we have. Or fix something that is broke or build something that the people need.
In contrast, the World War 2 Memorial took 197 million dollars to build of which almost 180 million was funded by sources other than our tax dollars.

  1. I am with you, I feel bad for these people and their families, but that is waaay too much money to send especially now. There are soooo many people needing homes, that were lost in the storm. Sooo many people needing health care, soo many hungry people. Just too many in need to spend money on a memorial.

  2. Well, all you really did was voice what I was thinking.  I grieve over the lives we lost that day.  And I do believe those on the flight acted as heroes and saved other lives.  BUT......I don't see why so many dollars have to be spent to honor them.  Don't even think it'd be what they'd want.  And if we were going to spend that kind of cash to honor them, why not do it in a way that might live on........special tech for airline security.....or scholarships in their fields.  Even though I gave money to the WWII war memorial campaign, I think most of them would say the best way to honor them would be to live free, with honor, love.....to uphold the ideals our nation was founded upon.  My father, step-father and uncles were these men.  I don't know......don't moarn me when I'm gone.....embrace me while I live!  -  Barbara

  6. Yes, I agree I think that is crazy.. I think that money could be used towards something else.. I mean I feel bad about the whole situation of what happened.. but you know..taxpayers dollars should not have to go towards a memorial.. If some richie rich on the other hand wants to pay for the whole thing and has no idea what to do with their money.. so be it.. let them.. lol* Their lives are not forgotten the ones that died that day.. our memory alone is a memorial.. when you really think about it.. it's forever going to be there.. in every Americans mind who lived in this country on that day..so just because it's out of sight.. it is not out of mind... as the old saying goes.. ;) Mel

  7. I'm with you on this. I'm in NY and 9-11 is still very vivid in my mind but I don't see how 58 million dollars can do anything to bring back those brave souls. A small park with a memorial would be just fine. What if we are attacked by terrorists again? Are we to build memorials all over the country wherever there was an attack or a happening? I think the money would be better spent on homeland security, especially our borders to protect future Americans from these poor souls fate.

  9. If they wanted $58 million, then they should have kept some of the funds they were given from the benefits for it.

  12. I am with the park idea. The very thoughts of all this brings me much pain. I am still not over any of this. Something beautiful that gives back would be more of a honor to the lost souls of Flight 93 in place of cold stone.
    Good thought provoking entry Celeste.
    Stop over~

  13. Agreed.  Too much money and while I have tremendous sympathy and empathy for all the victims of that day ... I can't afford to foot the bill.  And let's face it, you are correct again, that would buy or build a heck of a lot of homes.  As well as educate a lot of students!

  15. I agree...no toes stepped here.  I think a monument would be a testament to our unity...sure.  But so would actually TAKING CARE of all those directly affected.  Ahhhh...govt....gotta love it.  NOT. ;)  C.  http://journals.aol.com/gdireneoe/thedailies

  16. We are monument happy. Instead of erecting monuments to dead people, maybe, just maybe, we should begin to concentrate on the living this time.
