Barbed wire and legs don't mix

Every year we have attempted to go on a relaxing vacation. Hopefully one that would not cost an arm and a leg. So far we have been unsuccessful. Every year some thing would happen to the motorcycle that would cost us hundreds of extra dollars. Crystal, Pat's horse, decided that she would be the one to spoil our vacation this year. She got into a fight with barbed wire and the wire won. She has numerous cuts on her legs, back and sides. One in particular prompt a call to the vet. Luckily her tendon was not cut. This is what her leg looked like 2 days later when we got home. This is after I cleaned it up. It had copious amounts of yellow pus flowing out of it. My daily routine now consists of hosing her leg for at least 20 minutes at a time. At first it was twice a day. During that time I had to give her medicine by mouth. Now this was fun as she would pick out the food it was sprinkled on and not eat it. So I rigged up a syringe with apple sauce mixed with the medicine and gave it to her like wormer. Not fun as it was a large amount and could not be done quickly or all given at one time as it was a rather large amount. This followed by wrapping the leg up several times a day as the bandage would work its self down. After a week of that I had to add a topical antibiotic, steroid, anti-fungal ointment and wrap it up. This was for 5 days. Now I use neosporin and hydrocortisone cream. This is not easy. This horse does not really like me. I am constantly having to mess with a hurt back leg, a leg that could easily kill me with one kick if she so desired. I am so tired from the constant battle.
I am working hard to keep what is called proud flesh from developing. Proud flesh is a ugly, ugly, place. Any horse people out there that knows how to help, let me know. I know you can cauterize it, I also know that is not the best way to go as that can cause problems of its own.

New adventure

I am excited. I have a secret(and no it is not something to eat or feed)! I can't tell you yet what it is. I can tell you this...it will give me plenty to write about!

In the meantime let's talk about something else. How bout them Braves? LOL Had to throw that in. Round here people actually say that! Well I don't simply because I do not follow baseball. My mama did. She could tell you about them Braves. LOL

Still looking for hay. Most people round baled the spring cutting because of the rain. Now because of the NO rain there has no been a second cutting. Hopefully with the slightly cooler temps hay will once again be growing for the cutting!

Easter is a beautiful horse but, yep there is a but in there. Easter has a kicking problem. She kicked Brook in the hip and Pat in the shoulder. Luckily neither was hurt bad. We believe she also nailed Precious as she had a swollen leg yesterday. We know she has been kicking Crystal. We are sending her out for training. If she does not come back with a more respectful attitude to us then we will be selling her. I have a feeling we will be selling her anyway. If anyone out there has a sure fire way of breaking her of that habit I would be happy to hear of it.

OK time for hot chocolate then bed. Good night all.

Sunday Citar

Have you heard something or read something lately that has clicked and you said oh yeah!? Sunday Citar is the place to share it. Fresh Mommy is the place to go

"Beware of him who hates the laugh of a child" -Henry Ward Beecher-

How can anyone ever not smile when they hear the sound of a child's laugh? Every time I hear Brook laugh I feel a smile come to my own face. This photo is a few years old but the look of pure pleasure on her face is priceless. And looky there, Pat could not help himself, he had to smile with her.

Mountain ride

Today we rode horses up the side of a mountain. Well part way up. I decided that I had had enough!. It was hard on me and the horses. Hard on my nerves! It is not easy to ride a horse that is slipping on the trail! I did not relish the thought of sliding off a mountain. I know, I know, I would have hit a tree first but that was not appealing either!

I celebrate horses.

Here I am

I am still here. My birthday did not get any better. Let's just leave it at that. Next year I will not be having a birthday.

I hate sinuses. I hate them even more when you get a cold on top of it. Want to see people jump away from you? Try sneezing or coughing in public right now. That swine flu has everybody scared. I guess I should be. I live next door to some pigs. The swine flu does not scare me. All deaths from it (in USA) have been because the person had some other illness also. There are more deaths from regular flu than this swine flu. Not worried unless I start oinking instead of honking.

Our new horses are great. Cheyenne is 13 years. She has a great walk and run. She has been trained to compete in shows. Brook has been enjoying the rides she has been getting. We are having to work on Crystal and Precious. They have to get used to somebody else riding with them. We want to be able to load them all on the same trailer so we can ride somewhere else together. Easter is 5 years old. She is a sweetheart. She does have a major problem. She is not trained. Sure you can get on her back but she has no idea what to do. We are looking into a few trainers as we feel that she will be an excellent horse.

Friday(my ex birthday) Brook helped with the black belt test. She was beautiful! I am proud of her as she preformed her duties well. We had 3 take their test. As always I cried during the tea ceremony. It is such a solemn moment. I have not asked for permission from the parents to post the kids pictures so you will just have to take my word for it. Their faces are beaming with pride and show signs of exhaustion.

Ok itis time for me to get busy. I have work to catch up on that I was not able to do when I was sick. If it hit the floor it stayed there as my head would explode if I bent over.

Tuesday was a big day around here. We went to see a couple of horses and ended up bringing them home with us. A mother and daughter team named Cheyenne and Easter. The place where they were at was nothing but a mud hole. The owner wanted to sell them and get them out of the mud. They belonged to his wife who had recently died.
They are beautiful horses! They are American Saddlebred. Cheyenne is well broke. Easter on the other hand, is not broke at the age of 5. We are thinking of sending her to a trainer if it is not way too expensive. These 2 have never been separated. They need to be. Enjoy the pictures.

ouch ouch ouch

Well the teeth are gone. I did not realize how much pain I would be in. having my belly cut open hurt but this is something else.It is better now but no way can I go without pain pills. It is a bone weary hurt. Ever had a toothache? I have 23 of them right now. I know it will get better. It is getting better. I also know that I have some pretty teeth to smile with in a few months. That is the only thing that keeps me goping.

Brook has been sick this week, congested cough and a fever. She is better now also.

Pat went to the doc and he is going to keep him on predisone for another month. Thinks that if we can get past the winter season he will be better. I hope he is right.

Crystal is doing good. She was running and kicking up her heels the other day. Precious has finally lost some weight. Now I need to get a corral built to keep her in for part of the day after the spring grass starts coming up. Dancer has decided to allow himself to be rode without having a mre with him. That gained him some points with Pat.

Is winter almost over? I am so ready for spring.

rain, horses, jobs, what a combination

Brook has started her allergy shots and she is not liking it. She did admit that it did not hurt as much as she thought it would. I promised her a treat when she got them, unfortunately I am not taking her at this time.I now have 2 treats to get her. LOL She had her second shot today.

Crystal is doing much better. Her heel is healing up well. With any luck by the time spring gets here she will be rideable

The rain is back but not hard like it was last time. This time it would be able to soak in if the ground was not already saturated! With the amount of rain we have had, you would think that we would be out of a drought situation. Not so. We still need more water. The lakes are looking better, lakes do look better with water in them.LOL We will see.

Last night was the last night for Brook's weapons class. There is another one next month but I believe she will not be taking that one.

Candiac and Johnny are talking again about moving to Texas. I dread that when it happens. There are no jobs here for Candy. She will not be able to keep living here without work and because of her convicted felon status she is not able to get any help from the state. That is so wrong. She served her time, her probation period is over and she has stayed straight. One mistake and she is screwed for life.

I about had a heart attack. I checked to see what my electric bill is for this month and it is $200. That hurts!

Pat was informed at work that they may cut back to 32 hours a week. That will hurt.

Time is ticking down to my teeth coming out on Monday. That will hurt.

Cold, pain, and horses

It is cold here tonight. I know it is not as cold here as it is in some places (Donna in Missouri)BUT>>>>THIS IS GEORGIA!!!! It is 16 degrees with a wind chill of 4. That is cold and it is to get colder. It is now 15. Dang I better quit saying how cold it is!. Anyway I do not mind the cold so much because I have a warm home to be in. there are people and animals out there that will not survive the night because they are outside trying to survive. The homeless shelters are packed as full as they can safely do so. There will be people asleep in hospital lobbys and police will take people in to the station for loitering or something else just so they will have a warm place to be for the night. Even though, we will hear about someone that has died due to the cold. People forget about the animals. Sure they have fur coats but they are not polar bears(at least most aren't). They cannot build a fire or go into a Waffle House for a cup of coffee to get warm.
If you have any blankets that are just sitting around and never used, winter coats you have outgrown, take them to the shelters. They will be greatly appreciated.

We have a hurt horse. Crystal hurt her leg pretty bad. NOT the right weather to do that sort of thing. Not sure what happened. We believe she got into some barbed wire some where. This happened yesterday. Today her leg is swollen up to her knee. The vet left us some bute and a tetanus shot in the cooler outside the office. Real cool. They trust us to pay and others to not steal it. Country. She is in so much pain. It hurts me to see her. In addition to the shot and pain meds, I have to wash her leg at least once a day and apply some ointment to the cut 3 times a day. Hopefully she is not crippled by this. She is cut at her fetlock. For those of you that do not know what I am talking about, here is a link to a page so you can see It is part #16

The doctor released me. No need to go back until next year. Now I have to make an appointment with my other doctor to get bloodwork. I have gained 15 pound in 4 weeks. That is pretty much a good sign my thyroid is out of whack. I am really hating this.

Anyway life goes on.

Nothing special

Sometimes it is just hard to get started on things. I feel so lazy at times, actually all the time.

I don't remember if I shared the news. Brook won first place in the county for her category on her 4H project. She did it on the Water Cycle. At the end of this month she goes to the regional and compete there. I am proud of her.

Had fun plast night. The horses decided they were tired of a flooded pasture and barn. They decided to leave home. Late last night I get a call that my horses and goat were up the street. So I get dressed, put my mud boots on and head out. I got them home after first dragging through water half up to my knees trying to catch a stupid horse that STILL does not know which driveway is ours.( Not MY horse, it was Pat's horse. MY horse is perfect! LOLOLOL) I had a feeling it was going to be a long night. They got out again. This time they stayed in the yard. Pat put a rope up across the driveway to confine them for the night after he got home from work. Today they are still in the yard even though the fence is fixed. They are enjoying the fresh grass. I don't mind them in the yard. The chickens scratch up the poop so that is no problem. And frankly I enjoy looking out and seeing them.

I made pinto beans cooked with ham, and cornbread for dinner tonight. I had enough to share so I gave the kids some. I started cooking them last night in the crookpot. It makes the best beans. The house will be fragnant and musical for the next day or 2 LOL.

I am thinking I need to revisit Flylady I need to get a jump start again on this mess I am living in.

Christmas and other things

Christmas was okay around here. Brook, Candy, and Johnny came down and we exchange gifts. I was thrilled with my gift. I received and external hard drive, the exact same one I wanted! I also got nighties, perfume, sweats and a few other items. The kids left pretty fast. After that Pat's niece and her kids showed up and rode horses. Next came his step mother and 3 of her grandkids and they rode horses. All the while we were waiting on Pat's daughter and her 2 kids, that was supposed to show up and have dinner with us. She turned out to be a no-show and a no-call. Pat tried to not show disappointment but he was. Also, he was delaying going to see his mama. His sister called and said she had a death rattle. Pat and I finally ate and I convinced him to go see his mother. I told him that I could see the signs of him denying what was happening, the same as he did when his father lay dying. I know I sounded harsh but he needed to hear it. His mother did not have a death rattle( I have heard enough of them to know what they sound like) She was starting to run a low grade temp. Her responsivness was greatly decreased then from 2 days before. It won't be much longer. I am glad she made it thru yesterday. I know it sounds selfish, but her dying on Christmas would have made the future holidays very hard and I like Christmas too much. It would not do to have an already moody hubby even moodier because that is when his mother died...

LOL I am turning into my mother. Since my surgery I have been running around in a nightgown all the time. I laughed when I looked in a mirror today. It was like looking at my mother! She ran around all day in a housecoat, or a duster actually. Now I know why. It is actually very comfortable. And heck nobody comes over so who is going to see me anyways!?!

I looked at my fat horse yesterday and wondered what to do with her. I have her on light food, half rations of feed and hay and she is still round as a barrel! She is a very very easy keeper!. Pat is talking about going to the sales next month to see if any good cheap horses are going thru them. With the economy in the dumps people tend to get rid of animals. Someone at his work got a Tennessee Walker for $50!

Gonna get off of here. Getting sleepy.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas.
