I finally used my sewing machine that I got for Christmas! I made some hanging towels for the kitchen. I still need a lot of practice though. One thing is button holes. I really need to work on those. Every time I had to thread the machine I had to get a magnifying glass to see the needle hole. My eyes cannot see anything that small. Poor Brook always has to wait on Papaw to get her splinters out. She has gotten to the point that she does not even tell me about them anymore. back to the sewing. .. Brook has been picking out patterns for me but I do not know how to do any of that stuff yet. I never took Home Ec in school so I am learning from scratch. I also do not have any help in learning. No one I know sews! So here it is, my very first sewing project!
I think I like this. I will be doing more. I know the more I do the better it will get. Buttonholes are hard!
gr8 job!!! TerryAnn

ReplyDeleteThey look great Celeste! I had to teach myself to sew also. One of these days I'll learn on a machine. Right now I do all my sewing by hand. Also had to teach myself to crochet and knit too because I didn't know anyone who did it. It's alot of fun, and sometimes you can find a "I taught myself to........" book in the craft section at walmart.

They both look great!! Well done! I know button holes are hard. That's why I never did one! LOL! Years ago I bought a sewing machine (which still works). I had decided to teach myself to sew. I made one blouse. ONE! It came out ok. Nothing spectacular. After that, the machine got retired only to be brought out for repairing clothes and making pillow cases.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see more of your projects!

Awww the towels are cute. You're doing great. I am the official sticker picker outer here even though I can't see. Takes a magnifing glass, glasses, and light. Cactus has lots of stickers and John is always into them. Paula
ReplyDeleteCeleste they are great for your first attempt ~ practice makes perfect I am sure you will soon master button holes ~ can I put an order in for a summer dress !!!!! Ally x
ReplyDeletegood for you! I got a small cheap sewing mechine last summer off the HSN in hopes of learning to sew. even got the pretty pink one lol. When it came time to thead it .. i got totally lost and couldnt even figure out the directions. I had my MIL show me when she was here for a visit.. but I have totally forgotten and the sewing machine is put somewhere out of sight and mind lol.
ReplyDeleteMayby I'll get it out and try again?
Much Love,
Mary
You go Suzy Homemaker! Great job! Reminds me of all our sewing sessions for our big shows and benefits.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job. Button holes the first time out it ambitious. I've sewn all my life so if you have questions....I'll be glad to help you out!
ReplyDelete:)
How odd that you broke out the sewing machine now that there is probably more to do on the farm that there was all winter! LOL We're all a bit weird around here.

omg your already doing button holes....thats excellent.
ReplyDeletegreat job.
I am so proud of you. I have a sewing machine that I NEVER use. The girls use it for some homeschool classes. I could never thread it.
ReplyDeleteWell Considering that my sewing machine is a 1940 something Domestic that was a wedding gift to my Mama......I can't tell you how to do button holes on a new machine. That old one has an attachment you put on. And with it in place it really does all the work for you. That old machine makes beautiful full button holes instead of those little sketchy things you see on most of what you buy now.
ReplyDeleteI learned what I know of sewing from Mama. I made several things for myself in my high school years. But the truth is I do not LIKE to sew. So I hardly ever do. Some say it relaxes them. For me, it knots my neck up!! I did make Bug a few little sundresses when she was a toddler. And I have a pattern to make her some pants....material and everything.....just never have done it. Good thing it was one of those patterns with a range of 4 or 5 sizes!! LOL
Best of luck to you with your machine and the projects Brook is lining up for you! - Oh, they do make a really inexpensive thing you put the thread in a huge lupe and then stick the thin wire loop through the needle. Makes for easy threading.

THEY LOOK GREAT TO ME!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteyou could always just hand sew a button for looks and actually use velcro...which would last longer then buttons (the wear and tear on the button threads)...just a thought!!!!
Keep making them...they are adorable...

ReplyDeleteGreat job on the hanging towels. They are really pretty and you will always have the pride of making them yourself as you see them hanging. I'll bet there are some journals in Jland that deal with sewing tips.

I am really glad that you got the machine out. I just love to sew. It relaxes me soo much. I don't sew anything hard. I think that would take the fun out of it. Your towels look wonderfu. Keep up the good fun.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty looks like you did a good job
