Birds

My 2 cockatiels,Peaches and Chip, have produced a lovely set of babies. We have named them Bebe and Cece. Both babies are Pied so they are very colorful. It has been so much fun watching them grow from eggs to chicks.

It has been an experience watching these 2 parents take care of their babies. So many times they were in the nest for so long that I worried that they would starve to death! Then after the babies hatched I worried that they would still do so! Everything they ate they gave to their babies. They were eating triple what they normally do. I was going through a large bird bread a day in addition to their regular diet. Watching them feed their babies was a treat and a bit scary too. Brook kept telling me that they were hitting their babies in the head!. It does look very violent when they are being fed. After all they are not just putting food in their mouth, they have to shove it down into the baby's crops.

How they grow, and now ...well now I guess they are somewhere in the preteen age stage. LOL They fuss at mama and daddy to feed them yet they want to be independent. They will peck on their parents and of course mama and daddy peck back. They pull tail feathers and hollar. Fly around the cage and sit on the perches.  At night, when asleep on their perches, they sometimes fall off!

They are no longer making a lot of screeching noises(which I did not hear! Thank goodness!) They are starting to make singing notes. I talk to them everyday and whistle a note for them.  Chip(daddy) will talk back to me. He does a wolf whistle. Pat is amazed because he does not respond like that to him. Now Peaches is something else. Pat walks in the room and she lets out a whistle that I can hear! She demands his attention!

That's it for now. Enjoy the pictures. Until next time!

  1. Amazing to have followed them from eggs to pre-teens, so to speak. Will you have to get a new or bigger cage? Margo

  2. Loved the story and the pictures.  I had parakeets when I was young but don't have time or patience for birds now.  Love them though.

  10. I've never had much to do with birds, we always seem to have a cat ;)   But I have a friend with a parrot that is sooooo cool. I just love hanging out with him. What a wonderful experience being able to watch them grow.

  11. Bebe has unbelievable markings. WOW!  Just remember to keep them in seperate cages once they are eating regular food or their might be some jealousy issues plus you don't want inbreeding. I have a few tiels that were rescued from a house in another town who were off-spring of a brother and sister and it's horrendous. We have one that cannot fly because his wings are wider then his body!  They look great though. -Dawn-

  14. Sounds like fun with the baby birdies. I have only had a bird one time. That was before I had kids so I spent a lot ot time with it and taught it to say a few words and a wolf whistle by repeating the same ones over and over and over until the neighbor girls started mocking me. Once when an extermiatatior came I put the bird on the back porch when the man came around the corner of the house the bird gave out a big whistle and the man said did that bird do that? lol Paula
